Meld Spark FAQ

Common questions about Meld Spark, the AI tool for building custom stream overlays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a stream overlay?

A stream overlay is the layer of graphics that sits on top of your live video, including things like webcam frames, follower alerts, chat boxes, countdown timers, and goal trackers. Overlays give your stream a consistent visual identity and surface real-time information to your viewers, like new follows, subs, raids, and donations. Spark builds custom overlays for you from a description, no design or code experience required.

How do I create custom overlays for Twitch?

The fastest way is to use a tool that builds overlays from a description instead of templates or design software. With Meld Spark, you type something like "make a chat overlay in the bottom-left with smooth animations and a neon aesthetic" and Spark builds it directly onto your canvas inside Meld Studio. Your overlay appears in seconds, ready to drag, resize, and go live. No Photoshop, no template marketplace, no code.

How can I make stream overlays without design skills or knowing how to code?

Describe what you want in plain language. Spark, built into Meld Studio, turns your description into a working overlay automatically. You don't need Figma, Photoshop, or any coding background. If you can write a sentence describing what you want, Spark can build it.

How do I make animated overlays and alerts for my stream?

Spark builds overlays as live code, so animations are built in by default. Describe what you want, including how it should move ("slide in from the top," "pulse when it hits 30 seconds," "fade out after 5 seconds"), and Spark writes the animation directly into the overlay. Because the result is real code rather than a video file, animations run smoothly at 60fps and react to your stream events in real time.

How do I make stream alerts that react to follows, subs, and raids?

Ask Spark to build the alert and it handles the connection to your platform events for you. For example: "create a follow alert that slides in from the top with a celebratory sound and fades out after 5 seconds." Spark writes the code, drops it into your scene, and connects it to your live events. The same workflow covers subs, raids, donations, super chats, and chat-triggered alerts.

How do I add a goal tracker, sub goal, or follower goal to my stream?

Ask Spark to build it. Something like "create a follower goal widget in the top-right showing current followers out of 500, with a progress bar that fills in cyan when new follows come in." Spark builds the widget, connects it to your platform's live data, and drops it into your scene. The same workflow works for sub goals, donation goals, raid goals, and custom milestones.

How do I make a countdown timer for my stream?

Ask Spark for what you want. "Build a countdown timer in the top-right starting at 5 minutes, with a pulse animation in the last 30 seconds." Spark creates the timer and adds it to your scene. You can update the duration, position, or style at any time by asking Spark in chat, or by editing the layer directly in Meld Studio. The same workflow works for starting soon countdowns, break timers, and event countdowns.

How do I make custom overlays for YouTube, Kick, and TikTok streams?

Meld Studio supports Twitch, YouTube, Kick, and TikTok, and Spark builds overlays that work across all of them out of the box. The same custom alert, chat widget, or scene runs on every platform Meld is connected to. No reconfiguring per platform.

Can I make a starting soon screen, BRB screen, or chat overlay with Spark?

Yes. Spark builds anything that runs as a browser-based overlay, including starting soon screens, BRB screens, ending screens, chat overlays, lower thirds, countdown timers, goal trackers, follower/sub/raid alerts, and chat-controlled mini games. You can also request a full themed scene package in one prompt, like "set up Starting Soon, BRB, and Ending scenes with a cozy aesthetic."

Can I make chat-controlled games and interactive overlays with Spark?

Yes. Spark builds chat-driven mini games, chat-triggered effects, and overlays that respond to viewer commands or messages. For example, "build a Tetris game where chat votes on the next move every 10 seconds" or "create a 1v1 fighting overlay where viewers type !fight to challenge each other." Anything that runs as a browser-based overlay and reacts to chat input is buildable.

Does Spark work for VTuber streams?

Yes. Spark builds the layout elements that surround your avatar, including webcam frames, alerts, chat overlays, lower thirds, and full scene packages. Spark works alongside VTubing software like VTube Studio and VSeeFace. You bring your avatar, Spark builds everything else.

What's the difference between Spark and overlay packs from Streamlabs, StreamElements, or OWN3D?

Overlay packs are pre-designed templates. Most streamers spend $10 to $40 on a pack, swap the colors, and end up with a look that's shared by thousands of other channels. Spark builds overlays from your specific description, so what appears on your stream is custom to you. Spark creations are also live code, which means they animate at 60fps, react to live stream events like follows and subs, and can be edited line by line. Premade packs are great when you want something fast and don't mind a shared aesthetic. Spark is built for streamers who want a stream that looks like nobody else's.

Can I use Spark overlays with OBS Studio?

Spark is built into Meld Studio. If you currently stream with OBS, the simplest path is to use Meld Studio for your overlays. Meld is free on Windows and macOS, and many creators run it alongside OBS while they transition or switch fully.

What is Meld Spark?

Spark is a chat-based creative tool built directly into Meld Studio. You describe what you want in plain language and Spark builds it for you through a series of prompts.

What can Spark build?

Spark can build anything that runs as a browser-based overlay in your scene. Things like animated alerts, starting soon screens, overlays, and more. It can also apply effects to existing layers, move layers between scenes, and edit anything it creates.

How do I start using Spark?

Download Meld Studio for Windows or macOS. It's free. Open Meld, click the sparkle icon in the right sidebar to open the Spark panel, and type what you want to create. Spark builds it directly into your scene.

How much does Meld Spark cost?

Spark has three tiers. Meld Free is included with Meld Studio at no cost and gives you a limited number of Spark requests each month plus unlimited access to the Spark Elements gallery. Meld Pro is $20 per month with extended requests, smarter models, and priority processing. Meld Max is $60 per month with 10x higher requests, the most capable models, highest priority processing, first access to new features, and direct support from the Spark team.

What streaming platforms does Spark work with?

Spark works with Twitch, YouTube, Kick, and TikTok. Anything Spark builds connects automatically to the platforms you've linked in Meld Studio, so live events like follows, subs, raids, and chat messages trigger across every platform you stream to.

Can I edit overlays after Spark builds them?

Yes. Every Spark creation is fully editable. You can ask Spark to change colors, layouts, animations, or triggers in the chat, or edit the layer directly in Meld Studio just like anything else you've built by hand.

Can I use my own colors, branding, or images with Spark?

Yes. You can give Spark hex codes, brand colors, or drag in an image like a screenshot of your favorite game or a moodboard, and Spark will pull the palette from it. You can also drop in your logo or other custom assets and ask Spark to incorporate them directly.

Do I own the overlays I create with Spark?

Yes. Anything Spark builds in your scene is yours to keep and use however you want. Your creations stay in your studio.

Does Spark slow down my stream?

No. Spark runs on our servers, not on your computer's GPU. The overlays it produces render in a lightweight browser layer inside Meld Studio, so your GPU stays free for your game, camera, and encode.

What happens if I use up my monthly Spark requests?

Your existing overlays keep working. If you hit your plan's request limit, a banner in the Spark panel tells you when your requests reset or how to upgrade for more. Anything you've already built stays in your scene and continues to run normally.

Can I cancel my Meld Pro or Max subscription anytime?

Yes. Your Spark subscription can be cancelled at any time. You'll keep access through the end of your current billing period, and your existing overlays continue to work after that. Meld Studio itself remains free.

Can I use Meld Studio without Spark?

Yes. Spark is completely optional. Choosing not to use it has no impact on your normal Meld Studio experience.

Does Spark use AI?

Spark uses Google Gemini to understand your requests and write code. Importantly, Spark's output is always code (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript), not generated images, audio, or video. Think of it like having your own personal developer inside Meld Studio. It is not an image generator.

How does Spark handle my data and the prompts I send?

We've published a full transparency page covering how Spark works, what infrastructure it uses, what data is processed, and how to opt out of specific features. You can read the details at meldstudio.co/transparency.

Can Spark access my files, microphone, or camera?

No. Spark cannot read your filesystem, access your microphone, camera feed, or system audio. The only files it ever sees are ones you deliberately drag into the Spark chat yourself.

Can Spark replicate or steal a commissioned artist's work?

No. Because Spark writes code rather than generating images, it cannot reproduce, extract, or replicate artwork.

What about deepfakes or non-consensual content?

Spark is not a media generation tool and cannot produce deepfakes, fake images, or any non-consensual content. This is precisely why we built Spark to be purposeful and contained.
